Documentary – Knock Down the House (Netflix)
This documentary follows the primary campaigns of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (aka AOC) and three other female progressive Democrats who ran for Congress in the 2018 midterm election. Unsurprisingly, director Rachel Lears narrows in on the magnetic Ocasio-Cortez. A lot has been written about AOC, but getting a front row seat to the early days of her campaign only further highlights her undeniable talent.
AOC was my exact age when she ran for Congress and beat Joe Crowley against all odds. I’ll just have to accept that instead of running for Congress, I am sitting in bed writing this list.
Television – I May Destroy You (HBO / CraveTV)
Michaela Coel’s latest show is my favourite show of the year. While I think this is the kind of show you should dive into without any background information, I will provide some background. The series follows Coel’s character Arabella and her friends in the aftermath of her being sexually assaulted at a bar (note: the show includes graphic references to topics such as sexual abuse). The show is devastating, thought provoking and worthy of all the praise it has received. I do not think any amount of hype can make this one overhyped.
