Dancing and Letting Go

“The only way to make sense of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.”

– Alan Watts

With the continuous change in circumstances and the associated routines and emotions, it can be really difficult to keep adapting to new demands. I have found this to be especially true over the last few months with the overwhelming sense of responsibilities that arise from being a law student, the one year anniversary of COVID-19, and the pandemic associated measures and closures that we have all faced.

On March 12 last year we were told we would go online for a few weeks but that goal quickly shifted to at least the end of the semester. I turned to yoga as my daily exercise and routine to ensure I was keeping balanced and healthy. I also wrote about some other routines I tried to keep up with last semester including meditation and keeping an organized calendar.

This semester has been both busier and more challenging than before. To adjust, I have discovered that dancing for a few minutes a day can be liberating and empowering. Being from Colombia, the love for dance is in my blood as it is a huge aspect of my culture. However, I never had the opportunity to take dance classes or compete in dance where you learn about how to express certain emotions and feelings to an audience through a performance.

Putting music on for at least 10-15 minutes a day and just letting myself dance has been life changing. I have learned about the power of mind and body connection and the ability to release all the stress and built up emotions from the difficulties that have been experienced over the last year. Embracing the beauty in movement can really allow us to let go of built up emotions as our body moves along with the music.

I invite you to turn up the music, dim your lights and let yourself move into letting go of stress and welcoming a better mood. However, if freestyle isn’t for you, here are a few good YouTube channels you can subscribe to for great dance lessons and cardio dance classes. 💃
