If October isn’t your favourite month, you’re wrong

With a mixture of sports and delectable dietary options, it has a bit of everything

The Gregorian calendar serves as the master of time. It helps us simple beings to make sense of what happens when we see the sun one morning and then rise again the next. Divided into twelve months, there has long been great social debate as to which month reigns supreme amongst its eleven other counterparts. You might have your favourite, but the odds dictate that you have approximately a ninety-two percent chance of being wrong. The correct and objective answer is October.

For the sports fans out there, of which I consider myself to be in your midsts, October is the only month in which all four major North American sports leagues play meaningful regular season or postseason games. As we push towards crowning a World Series champion from the boys of summer, hockey and basketball are welcomed with open arms to carry us through the cold of winter and well into the new year when the world begins to thaw. Meanwhile, the NFL landscape begins to take shape as Sundays begin to feel normal again, with a full day’s slate of games to help us forget the impending dread of the school and work week ahead. Regardless of which sport you prefer and team(s) you support, October will never leave you searching for an athletic event to watch on TV, all while yelling at your fantasy team players for losing you money that shouldn’t have been wagered in the first place.

But if sports aren’t your thing and indulgence comes by way of food, one would be hard pressed to find anything more synonymous with October than pumpkin spice. Whether it flavours your latte or is incorporated in some other bizarre food or beverage a culinary team has concocted, you can be assured that for thirty-one days a craving for all things pumpkin will be satisfied and then some. Even with pumpkin spice’s prominence, the return of heavier meals to keep us warm with the sweet finish of an apple or pecan pie is more than enough to satiate those who might be pumpkin averse.

A common thread runs through these October-isms: the changing of seasons and weather. October officially welcomes a cool and crisp air that helps us recover from the excruciating heat of summer, and demands that the best part of our wardrobes take center stage. In the choice between extreme heat and extreme cold, you can always add a sweater on top of your shirt or a nice scarf to protect your neck, but when the body is naked there is nothing more that can be done. What better way to sport your fall outfit than by breathing in fresh air at an apple orchard or a pumpkin patch? October weather provides the perfect opportunity to escape from domestic confinement and experience the world in the most cute and wholesome manner possible.

When looking at all twelve months objectively, the choice of which one is your favourite should be clear. If October isn’t your favourite month, you’re wrong.
