Snack with Sophie: The Best Toronto Restaurants for Hanging with the Homies

S

Attention all Osgoode foodies, aspiring foodies, or anyone who just loves to eat as a coping mechanism for law school stress:

My name is Sophie, I am a 3L student, and as much as I absolutely love studying the law, my true passion in life is food and exploring the Toronto food scene.

My personal mantra is “life is one big food tour” and I view each day as simply a vehicle for trying new restaurants. Growing up in Toronto, I have been fortunate enough to immerse myself in Toronto’s seemingly endless food culture and explore all corners of the city’s cultural mosaic through restaurants, bars, and cafes. To me, food is an incredible way to connect with different cultures and find a common ground with individuals from all walks of life.

This year, I hope to take you all on a tour of the Toronto food scene through this column. From casual to fancy, bars to cafes, and whether you’re a Toronto for-lifer or brand new to the city, let’s roam the streets and feast together!

So while I occasionally have some controversial food takes (gefilte fish is elite and I will die on this hill) I hope you trust me enough to try some of these places out and let me know what you think. I am ALWAYS open to suggestions/recommendations/any feedback you might have. If you are passionate (whether it’s love or disdain) about any of the places I mention, or if there’s somewhere I haven’t tried you think I must eat at — feel free to let me know!

I wanted to kick this off with my Top 3 Favourite establishments for not only great food, but great banter with your squad. Before the summary-creation crunch commences and the bone-chilling winds of winter confine us to our bedrooms, here are some of the best places (in no particular order) to hang out with friends while we still can:

Spot 1: Little Sister Indonesian Food Bar

This food bar is an intimate and delicious space to experience the wide range of flavours found within Indonesian cuisine. The Yonge St. location features communal tables that are a perfect place to gab over a plate (or five) of their croquettes, satay, or — my personal favourite — the war fries smothered in spicy mayo and peanut sauce. The dishes here are best enjoyed as a sharing experience to maximize the yummy flavours you can take in, and it’s super fun to discuss your fave items with the gang. Little Sister takes reservations every day of the week, so you don’t have to waste precious time with the homies standing around on a waitlist.

And a little not-so-lowkey lowkey fact for you all, the basement of Little Sister’s Portland location houses a secret speakeasy called XXX filled with fun cocktails! Open Wednesday—Saturday, all you have to do is get a playing card from the hostess or bartender to access this underground space.

Address: 2031 Yonge St / 102 Portland St

Spot 2: Chef’s Hall

This might be cheating because Chef’s Hall is actually multiple restaurants in one… but that’s what makes it a perfect place to head if your group is indecisive! We all have those nights where one friend is craving pizza, one is craving burgers, one is craving Italian, etc. Lucky for us, Chef’s Hall has it all.

From cold-cut Hungarian sandwiches at Grandma Loves You, to Oswald’s deep-dish pizza slices, to Japanese Tempura from Tempura Keisuke, Chef’s Hall has something for everyone. Whether your crew is made up of notoriously picky eaters or seasoned foodies there’s really something for everyone here! Plus, Chef’s Hall is abundant with long communal tables and ample seating so you won’t be scrambling for a spot to wolf down the delicious eats.

Also noteworthy, this spot is located right in the heart of Toronto’s Financial District so it’s perfect for a post-work hang after the gang clocks out for the day.

Address: Richmond-Adelaide Centre – 111 Richmond

Spot 3: Campechano

There are few cuisines better suited for a night out with friends than Mexican food. If you need a reliable spot to get the margarita pitchers flowing with super tasty tacos at an affordable price, look no further than Campechano. You can also flex that this spot is a Michelin Guide restaurant, but at a not-so-Michelin price point.

Your meal will start off with FREE and UNLIMITED chips to piledrive throughout your convos (doused with guac, salsa, or both!). Then, make your way into the amazing cocktails and sangrias, by the glass or by the pitcher (depending on what kind of night it is). And then indulge in the star of the show: the tacos!

My personal fave would have to be the Pescado (battered fish) Taco, but other fan favourites include the vegan hongos taco, and the sweet and spicy pollo al pastor.

And like Little Sister, this is a spot where you can make a reservation for your group and take in the awesome patio before it gets too cold out.

Address: 460 College St / 504 Adelaide St W
