Another Spot to Add to Your Ever-Growing Toronto Restaurant List
Imagine yourself walking past a busy restaurant, after having just eaten elsewhere, and being jealous of the packed tables and wafting smell of churros. You know in your soul that you were destined to eat there one day. I too have faced this scenario.. Except, last week, I was finally able to fulfill my destiny – I ate at Milagro on Mercer. Milagro offers a wide array of traditional Mexican food ranging from the classic taco, to delicious enchiladas, to traditional entrées such as mole poblano. You can leave the restaurant without spending more than a reasonable amount – around $20 to $30.
First up, a round of margaritas for the table. However, I insisted on a traditional mojito instead; it was decent, but slightly more on the bitter side. Nobody complained about the high alcohol content though. Next, the entrées. I ordered a taco dish comprised of octopus, avocado, and fried onions with a delicious and spicy sauce. The most unusual part of the dish was the crispy tortilla. Instead of a traditional soft shell or hard shell taco, with which you are able to pick up the taco with all of its contents, this one was unlike any other. It was crispy and flat with all of the contents placed on top. So, when I tried to pick it up, I realized I was doing it all wrong. Instead, I ended up cutting the tortilla and grabbing a little piece of all the taco’s parts into every bite. This unique feature added to the entire experience because it provided the right amount of “crunch” every time.
But the meal had not yet come to an end. Nearly every person ordered the exact same dessert. The churros came out one-by-one, neatly stacked, with a serving of cajeta caramel. In mere minutes, all the plates were empty. These fried pastries had the perfect mix of sugar and cinnamon. And if the food wasn’t enough to convince you, their customer service was great too. We exited the restaurant feeling happy and full. It wasn’t until I was almost home that I realized that I was without my favourite pair of sunglasses. I called up the restaurant and they were so helpful in locating them. They put my sunglasses aside for me until I was able to pick them up.
So, after reading all that, I know you’re asking yourself: what were the highlights? Order anything with a crispy tortilla. You might regret the mess, but not the taste. And what about any lowlights? Maybe skip the drinks and opt-in for a second round of churros instead. I would definitely give Milagro on Mercer two thumbs up. Don’t believe me?
