The Osgoode Chapter of the Canadian Lawyers for International Human Rights (CLAIHR) is hosting its first networking event of the semester and it is one you do not want to miss! The theme will be Transnational Corporations and Social Responsibility. Those who are passionate or interested in human rights, Indigenous, environmental, public interest, or international law are encouraged to attend. Special Guest Cory Wanless, the lawyer representing the plaintiffs in the case of Choc v. Hudbay, will be our keynote speaker for the evening. More speakers will be announced as the event approaches. This event will take place in the JCR on Monday, March 2nd at 5:30pm. We will have food (no pizza!) and drinks for all, as well as a raffle for some wonderful prizes. Come out and see the range of opportunities your legal career has to offer.
About Cory Wanless:
Cory Wanless is a litigation lawyer and an associate at Waddell Phillips Professional Corporation. He has extensive experience in complex civil litigation and has argued at all levels of court in Ontario and Alberta, including the Supreme Court of Canada. He practices in the areas of corporate accountability, human rights, Indigenous rights, police accountability, environmental law, and human rights defenders. His cases are often both high-profile and precedent-setting.
At the moment, he is co-counsel in a ground-breaking corporate accountability case against a Canadian mining company for their involvement in human rights abuses in Guatemala. Previously at the Supreme Court, Cory represented a group of human rights organizations intervening in the case of Chevron for its part in the pollution of the Amazon Rainforest in Ecuador.
