Join the Club: Meet Osgoode’s Newest Student Organizations

J

Each year, Osgoode Hall Law School welcomes a diverse student body from all walks of life. These students not only bring a keen interest in the legal career, but also the perspectives of various backgrounds. As a result, many clubs at Osgoode have emerged that reflect the interests of new generations of lawyers over the years.

In September 2024, a number of new student clubs were ratified in accordance with the Legal and Literary regulations on student organizations. Here are some of the new student organizations on campus that we encourage you to get involved with!

The Immigration and Refugee Law Society

The Immigration and Refugee Law Society (IRLS) was founded by co-Presidents Shreya Vohra and Sahar Fatima over their shared passion and interest in Immigration and Refugee Law. IRLS is the first student-led organization at Osgoode to cater exclusively to students and professionals practicing in Canadian immigration and refugee law. IRLS seeks to provide networking opportunities to industry professionals, provide professional development opportunities to current students, and foster an environment for students and professionals to learn more about immigration and refugee law in Canada. Since IRLS first appeared at Osgoode’s annual Clubs Fair, it became evidentt that there is an abundance of students who want to explore and practice immigration and refugee law.

IRLS has an ambitious event schedule for the 2024–2025 academic year featuring panels, Q&As, and a shadowing program with litigation professionals. IRLS has an Alumni Panel and Networking Event scheduled in October 2024 to bridge the gap between Osgoode graduates practicing in immigration and refugee law, and students who are interested in exploring these areas.

In order to stay up to date on IRLS events, the presidents encourage you to follow the IRLS Instagram account @OsgoodeIRLS and LinkedIn page at “Immigration and Refugee Law Society.” All inquiries and requests to join general membership or the IRLS mailing list can be directed to OsgoodeIRLS@gmail.com.

Osgoode German Students Association

The Osgoode German Students Association (OGSA) was founded by Jacob Stickel, who is serving as the OGSA president. He is supported by OGSA Vice President, Allison Jutzi in the organization’s inaugural year. As a student of German heritage, Jacob seeks to foster a community on campus for students interested in German culture and traditions. OGSA serves as a platform for cultural exchange, networking and growth, offering a unique opportunity for students of German heritage. By promoting cultural understanding and collaboration, OGSA adds value to the law school experience, encouraging students to broaden their global perspectives and enhance their professional networks. OGSA’s activities not only celebrate German culture, but also contribute to a diverse and inclusive environment at Osgoode Hall Law School. Jacob has indicated that OGSA is a special organization, as it appears to be the first student group of its kind in North America.

OGSA has recently hosted its inaugural event, inviting members to celebrate Oktoberfest in Kitchener, Ont. Jacob shared that “Kitchener hosts the largest Oktoberfest celebration outside of Münich, making it the perfect venue to come together in gemütlichkeit (the feeling of warmth, friendliness, and good cheer).” The organization anticipates future events in collaboration with German-Canadian institutions in Toronto, and encourages students of all levels to connect with the OGSA via email.

To keep in touch with the OGSA, students may follow the organization on Instagram at @OsgoodeGSA or “Osgoode German Students Association” on LinkedIn. Students can be added to the OGSA mailing list by messaging the team on either platform, or sending an email to OsgoodeGSA@gmail.com.

Eastern and Central European Society of Osgoode

The Eastern and Central European Society of Osgoode (ECEO) was created by a small group of like-minded students of Eastern or Central European background. ECEO’s objective is to advance and promote the professional development of members, and create a space wherein students with connections to Eastern Europe may gather and meet. Founder and President, Vasily Alexander explains, “We [ECEO] are the first organization of its kind at a law school in North America and we are excited for you to join us!” ECEO seeks to transcend the ethno-religious divides by focusing on shared interests and commonalities. ECEO honourably seeks to encourage its members to support one another’s growth, whilst fostering a genuine community within the walls of Osgoode Hall Law School.

ECEO has an array of professional events planned in collaboration with existing student organizations at Osgoode. Such events would include networking and communication with lawyers and professionals from similar cultural regions. Other planned initiatives include cultural events that demonstrate the cultural radiance and diversity of Eastern and Central Europe. ECEO encourages student involvement and encouragement for the planning and execution of its future events.

To get involved with ECEO and to remain informed on the exciting events they have planned for the year, follow @ECEOsgoode on Instagram, or write an email to ECEOsgoode@gmail.com.
