Hispanic Heritage Month and Latin Restaurant Suggestions

October is Hispanic Heritage Month. Take a break from midterms and OCIs to indulge in some Hispanic food around the GTA. From spicy Mexican tacos to gluten-free Venezuelan Arepas and rich Colombian soups, there is great variety.

As background, in 2015, Bill 28 was given Royal Assent in Ontario and that proclaimed October to be Hispanic Heritage Month. While our province has only recently given official recognition in the province, October has generally been recognized in Hispanic countries as a month to celebrate Hispanic and Latin culture. For clarification purposes, the term Hispanic refers to individuals whose mother tongue is the Spanish language; including Spaniards. The term Latin American (Latinx) refers to those who are of Latin (or South American) descent; including Brazilians whose mother tongue is Portuguese. Canada is home to more than 440,000 Latin Americans and more than 495,090 Canadians have reported that Spanish is their mother tongue; so there are a lot of us celebrating this month!

Venezuelan:

The Arepa Republic – 76 Densley Avenue

Arepas are a staple of Venezuelan and Colombian diets. While Colombians have them with butter for breakfast or as a side for lunch, Venezuelans stuff the warm corn flatbreads with some delicious toppings such as beans, chicken, fried plantain and avocado. The Arepa Republic is very authentic and even runs two food trucks in addition to the restaurant. Vegan options are available.

Mexican:

Good Hombres – 374 Bathurst Street

Who doesn’t love tacos? Good Hombres serves up authentic Mexican tacos with tortillas that are made at the front of the restaurant. There are a variety of taco fillings to choose from; and because each taco is only $3.75, you’ll have room to experiment!

Peruvian:

Mira Restaurant – 420A Wellington Street West

This restaurant serves elevated and refined Peruvian dishes. The ingredients are brought from Peru and the dishes are plated beautifully. Mira is perfect for a special occasion as they offer prix fixe staring at $85 per person.

Latin American Variety:

Baro – 485 King Street West

Baro has become a King West favourite. They have multiple levels at their location which each offer different food and drink menus. Their drinks are amazing and they sometimes host Friday night Latin parties which include dancing lessons for those who show up early!

Maiz – Multiple locations, see website for the location closest to you!

This casual chain just keeps growing! Here you can find tacos, arepas, Colombian Bandeja Paisa, churros and LOTS of drink options. Personally, my favourite menu comes from its location on Yonge street but the Arepa Bar on Queen Street West is also a must!
